Many isolated New Guinea peoples predominately used stone technology until Australian colonists introduced steel tools in the mid-20th century. The online collections provide access to all the information held by the Museum about the objects and historic photographs in its collections. Conservators at the Pitt Rivers use a variety of techniques to stabilise and preserve ethnographic objects, and slow down further deterioration. Their techniques include analysis of materials and historical research.

  • Inside this pit is a wooden chamber 5 meters (16.4 feet) long, 3.5 meters (11.5 feet) wide and 1.3 meters (4.3 feet) high.
  • Many of the Greek statues well known from Roman marble copies were originally temple cult images, which in some cases, such as the Apollo Barberini, can be credibly identified.

Bronze portrait of an unknown sitter, with inlaid eyes, Hellenistic period, 1st century BC, found in Lake Palestra of the Island of Delos. Another notable change is the burgeoning of artistic credit in sculpture. The entirety of information known about sculpture in the Archaic and Geometrical periods are centered upon the works themselves, and seldom, if ever, on the sculptors. Examples include Phidias, known to have overseen the design and building of the Parthenon, and Praxiteles, whose nude female sculptures were the first to be considered artistically respectable. Praxiteles’ Aphrodite of Knidos, which survives in copies, was often referenced to and praised by Pliny the Elder. The Classical Period also saw an increase in the use of statues and sculptures as decorations of buildings.

The archaeological layers beneath have only been partially excavated and have been an objective of a research excavation by the DFG since 2010. A recently uncovered artefact at Vindolanda sheds a new light on the Dark Ages of Britain. Hidden in the remains of a 6th century Christian church, inside the previously occupied Roman Fort, were the fragmentary remains of a lead vessel, lightly etched with symbols of early Christian iconography. Furthermore, a vast quantity of jade , bone , ivory, stone and ceramic objects, as well as thousands of cowrie shells were found in the tomb. Apart from these offerings, human sacrifices were also performed, so that Fu Hao would have servants to serve her in the afterlife. This is evident in the skeletons off 16 human beings buried around the perimeter of her tomb. Lady Fu Hao is a highly extraordinary character from Chinese history, who lived over three millennia ago.

The place has been planned as an extracurricular place of learning. Responsible for the conception and contextual planning was the Lower Saxony State Service of Cultural Heritage. The spears and the place of discovery have revolutionized the picture of the cultural and social development of early humans. Previously, the widespread opinion was that Homo heidelbergensis (and Neanderthals, regarded as a descendant of H. heidelbergensis) were simple beings without language that lived on plants and carrion.

The Museum holds archaeological and ethnographic objects from all parts of the world. It was founded in 1884 when General Pitt Rivers, an influential figure in the development of archaeology and evolutionary anthropology, gave his collection to the University. Others were inspired by his gift, and the collections grew exponentially over the last century. By the early 19th century, the systematic excavation of ancient Greek sites had brought forth a plethora of sculptures with traces of notably multicolored surfaces, some of which were still visible. Many statues were given jewellery, as can be seen from the holes for attaching it, and held weapons or other objects in different materials. There are about 20 wooden model ship kit manufacturers throughout the world.

Whilst it may be possible that these great works were performed after she rose to the top of the hierarchy, it may be equally plausible that it was these deeds that helped Fu Hao secure her high position in Shang society. Regardless, LFu Hao’s tomb is a perfect reflection of the status that she had in life. Lady Fu Hao lived during the reign of Emperor Wu Ding of the Shang dynasty (c. 1250 – 1192 B.C.). According to Chinese historical records, Wu Ding gained the alliance of neighbouring tribes by marrying a woman from each of the tribes. As a result, he had numerous wives, 60 according to historical sources, and Fu Hao was one of them. Although it is unclear as to the way Fu Hao rose through the ranks, the Shang dynasty oracle bones provide us with some information as to her contributions to the Shang dynasty.
